The 6 Bar Tools You Need for Making Excellent Whiskey Cocktails

If you are setting up or upgrading your home bar, specific bar tools are essential, especially if you plan on making whiskey cocktails. From everything you need to shake or stir your cocktail to custom engraved glasses to pour your cocktail into, here are some of the bar tools you need to make excellent whiskey cocktails.

Bar Spoon for Measuring and Stirring

First, you will need an actual bar spoon. These usually have a spiral handle and are long, with a smaller spoon than your typical dining spoon. You can use it to measure small amounts of liquid, but the main function is to stir. There is a technique that is easy to learn that will help you easily stir your cocktail. To impress guests, make and stir your cocktails in your glasses etched with your monogram. This cools the drink without diluting it as much as shaking it, and the custom glasses give the feeling of a personal bar.

Boston Shaker and Mixing Glass for Shaking and Stirring

Ditch the shaker with the strainer on the lid. You want a Boston shaker, which nearly all bartenders use. These come as two pieces, either metal or metal and glass. The strainers on shakers usually don’t do a good enough job, and the Boston shaker is more efficient at shaking. You will want a mixing glass if you are stirring, especially if you are serving more than one person.

Muddler and Knife for Ingredients and Garnishes

Wood or metal, get yourself an actual bar muddler for when you need to muddle ingredients together. It’s an essential tool if you like old fashioneds or mint juleps, both of which require muddling. You will want a small paring knife, as well, to cut garnishes or ingredients like orange peels for muddling.

Strainers to Keep Your Cocktails Neat

Double straining is often used in cocktail-making, and you will want two different strainers. The first is the tea strainer, which goes over the glass and has a fine mesh. A Hawthorne strainer has a disc, or rim, with a handle and two prongs. A metal spring on the rim fits inside a shaker and filters out any ice shards or bits of fruit from shaking. Typically, you will pour your shaker with the Hawthorne strainer into a glass that has a tea strainer on it.

Bottles for Saline and Simple Syrup

A little salt can change a cocktail, so you might want to have a bottle of water and salt, or saline, ready to add a drop or two. You will also want bottles for simple syrup, which is easy to make at home with equal parts water and sugar in a pot on the stove. Boil and stir until dissolved, let it sit, and fill the bottle. You can also get bottles for bitters, whether you make your own or not, or just use the bottles they come in.

Metal Picks for Garnishes

Instead of using a wooden toothpick, a metal pick is an elegant way to add a cherry or other garnish to a drink. It’s much classier and a great way to easily elevate a drink.
